On that capacity, I have been working with various marginalized social groups in West Bengal, India. Presently I am trying to write a history of mass political formation in post-colonial Calcutta by taking the city pavement and its informal economic actors, specifically the hawkers, as my subject group. For an ethnographic survey, I spend days with them in the pavements and their muhallas (dwellings), learning their own experiences in the city, sharing and validating my academic engagement, and making them aware of their rights to survive in this world as dignified individuals. In several occasions I had the opportunity to interact with the city governors where I acted as a hinge person telling them how they can learn from the daily toilers about their own perceptions of democracy and development to make the path of development more humane and participative.

Hello, I’m Nguyen THi Thu Ngan form Vietnam National University, Hochiminh City. Like most Vietnamese names, my first name Thu Ngan means a cashier for which my parents hoped I would have a prosperous life. I’m thankful to them because I’m now indeed a “rich” woman with a good teaching career to build, and a happy small family with two bright daughters and a beloved husband. My family cherish every moment we share watching a good movie or making a joke of one another. I love traveling though I do not have much chance to do it. Overseas study for higher education is the dream I always wish to come true. I’ve not been to such an international forum like this; thus I am eager to learn everything about it and everyone concerned in it. This valuable experience will definitely boost my career back there in Vietnam.
